Natural Skincare: Brown Sugar & Almond Body Scrub

Most of us are already aware that sugar is a big no-no. Bad for our teeth. Bad for breakouts. Bad for our intestines. We are also becoming increasingly aware that what we put on our bodies is almost as (if not equally as) important as what we put into them. You would never drink a whole load of manmade chemicals...(actually, perhaps some of us do...I daren't look at the back of a Diet Coke can!!)...so why do we plaster them on our skin on a regular basis? Our moisturiser, deodorant, make up, suncream etc are all filled with nasties. Your skin is an organ, in fact it's the biggest one we have, and whatever we put on it is absorbed into our bodies. More and more people are turning to natural alternatives...and our old nemesis sugar is often included when it comes to natural skincare. It may be bad for our insides, but for our outsides it's the perfect natural ingredient!

About 18-months ago I became increasingly aware that I needed to begin the transition of switching to more natural skincare. I've not made as many changes yet as I would have liked to (lack of research and being stuck in old habits have held me back somewhat - really I just need to be more proactive!), but one product that I have successfully "ditched and switched" is my body scrub. It's a good one to start with as it's ridiculously easy to make and the ingredients are all affordable and easy to buy online. So without further ado, I introduce you to *drum roll please* the glorious brown sugar and almond body scrub!

Some mini pots of brown sugar & almond body scrub I made for the Day of Happiness yoga retreat in July with the wonderful My Happy Body

Four very simple ingredients:

Brown sugar - 1 cup (as fine or as chunky as you like on your skin)
Almond oil - 1/2 cup
Vitamin E oil - 1/2 tsp
Vanilla extract - 1 tsp

I originally found this recipe on the Wellness Mama blog

The amounts of ingredients can of course vary depending on how much you'd like to make. In the above photo I made way more than this (I think I used 1.5kg of sugar for 12 pots!), and just judged the oils by sight and texture. This is not like a recipe in the kitchen, it doesn't have to be exact.

The body scrub leaves you feeling AMAZING - exfoliated and oiled up all in one go; and knowing that it's all natural and nourishing for your skin makes it even more wonderful. The other bonus is that it's so much cheaper than the posh ones in the shops! (I used to indulge in the Sanctuary ones which cost over a tenner, but this one probably costs me a pound or two per pot!).

If anyone has any further advice on natural skincare I would love to hear it! I've dedicated myself to gradually phasing out unnatural products that may contain hidden nasties. I already use a couple of Lush products and have recently tried Beauty by Earth suncream, but I'd love to hear your ideas too (particularly if you can make them at home!).

Love & light beauties,

Glowing Goddess!

It's February. This means that unless you're super rich and have lots of spare time you won't have seen the sun in about 6 months! I don't know about you, but I'm feeling pretty pasty, and my skin can often look dull over the long winter months. Now, I'm not a fan of faking a tan, especially not on a sunbed, so I have to succumb to the paleness that comes with an English winter. However paleness does not have to equally dullness, and this year I've found three amazing items of makeup that are helping me glow through winter!

The most important thing when trying to get that winter glow comes in the preparation stages. Take a look at My Winter Beauty Secrets  post to see my favourite exfoliators and body moisturiser (I'm still choosing my favourite facial moisturiser, so there isn't one on the list, but at the moment I'm using Garnier Dark Spot Corrector). Once I am fully exfoliated and moisturised I then apply my base makeup (Clinique foundation and concealer). After that, I apply the three below products to give me a lovely winter glow!

BOBBI BROWN
pink quartz shimmer brick
£32

BENEFIT
moon beam highlighter
£18.50

MAC
dazzlelight neutral eyeshadow with shimmer
£12

The Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick is truly amazing, and I can't believe I've waited so long to try it! It gives you a tiny bit of colour, whilst adding pearly shimmer to your face, radiating a subtle glow that makes you look healthy in the dull winter. I apply this with a thick blusher brush to my whole face. It also doubles up as gorgeous eyeshadows. The Benefit Moon Beam compliments the Shimmer Brick effect by adding extra light and shimmer to the top of your cheek bones and under your eyes. The Mac eyeshadow is just brilliant - this colour is beautiful neutral, enhancing your eyes without looking too obvious.

Why not try these shimmering products to give you that subtle glow this winter?

My Winter Beauty Secrets

The temperature in London right now is -1°c. It's cold, and it's only meant to get colder! This sort of weather is tough on your skin, hair and nails, so in the winter we need to spend that little extra time taking care of ourselves. You feel as though it's not worth it as you're constantly wrapping yourself up in coats, hats and gloves, but the more you look after yourself in the winter, the easier your routine will be to get ready for summer. Plus, if you know your skin feels nice under all those winter layers, you'll feel better in yourself on the outside.

So here are my top 11 winter beauty secrets - all tried and tested over the years, and all ones which I totally rely on during these long winter months!

CLINIQUE

NEUTROGENA

BIO OIL

£8.99

Each of these products really are fantastic for fighting those winter beauty demons. I use the L'occitane hand cream every day (it's on my desk at work!) and it's really great for keeping my hands soft, whilst smelling delicious! A new edition to my beauty regime is the Clinique body butter, and I absolutely adore it! After exfoliating with the Soap & Glory Flake Away exfoliator I love to treat myself with the Clinique body butter - it's not too thick, not too thin, and feels amazing on my winter battered skin! The grapefruit facial scrub has been part of my skincare routine for at least a year now, and is perfect for brightening dull winter skin as well as maintaining a healthy glow in the summer. To look after my nails I make sure that all nail varnish is properly removed, and then I apply the Burt's Bees lemon butter cuticle creme, which I let settle before applying a generous coating of the Sally Hansen strengthener. And Bio Oil should be a staple in any women's beauty regime - it's perfect for banishing unwanted scars and evening skin tone.

So I hope that you manage to try some of these products, I really do recommend them all. My winter beauty regime has been tried and tested for a number of years now, and these are the products that have become my staples and life savers!

What are your top tips for staying soft and glowing over the winter months?
