Baby, you should go and love yourself

2015 was the year I became a Belieber. I didn't think it would ever happen, but as soon as Love Yourself hit the radio I knew I just had to buy the album...and now I'm hooked! But as much as I love that song (and I really love it!), the line "Baby, you should go and love yourself" highlights a big problem for me. It implies that loving yourself isn't a good thing, and reiterates how it's ingrained in our psyches that to love oneself can sometimes be perceived as negative.

If you read my January post you'll notice that I'm all about encouraging self-love. It's something I've struggled with for a long, long time (and to be honest still do), and I know I'm not the only one. So let's explore this further: why do so many of us find it hard to love ourselves? Or if we do why is it such a bad thing to vocalise it?

LOVE <3 image source

It seems to be that self-hatred has become more socially acceptable than self-love. When we hear someone say "oh I look so bloated today", "don't look at my bad skin", "my hair is a mess" etc, our initial response is one of compassion and we instantly say something to build them up and put aside their self-criticism. We show empathy and we see them in a positive way.

However when we hear someone complement themselves or speak positively about themselves (a rare occasion), we are taken aback and often respond with thoughts of "wow, you must love yourself" - and this is often not meant kindly. It's not our fault. It's how we've always been. Perhaps it's a bigger problem in British culture as we are somehow programmed from a young age to over-apologise and self-deprecate (we do say "sorry" a lot!). And because we don't internally approve of this in others, it is no doubt much harder to internally approve of ourselves too.

But this attitude must change. To love yourself is not the same as having an inflated ego. Inflated egos are not attractive, whereas self-love is. There is a huge difference between the two. Self-love is about knowing you are worth your love, being kind to yourself, and appreciating all your wonderful goodness. An inflated ego believes it is the most important person in every situation and that it is the centre of everything. I'm not here to put down inflated egos - we're all on our own journeys, working through our own messes, and I have no right to pass judgements - but I think it's really necessary to point out that there is a BIG difference. Realise this and hopefully you can begin to shift your thinking: it is okay to love yourself.

In yoga-speak I'd like to introduce you to one of the yamas (ethical codes) of yoga: ahimsa, meaning non-violence. Of course this means non-violence to others, but ahimsa also means non-violence towards oneself. The reason for this? Everything is OM. Everything is One. If you are violent towards yourself, you are indirectly being violent towards others. So really, according to yogis, it is your ethical obligation to love yourself ;)

You are enough. You are enough. You are enough. You deserve your love as much as anyone else does. Once you learn to love yourself, you'll find it easier to love others too. Love cultivates more love! It's a pretty good cycle to be in! And it's a crucial part of being Beautifully Healthy, inside and out.

Need some tips on how to actually learn and grow self-love? Check out my January post to learn more.

I'd be really interested to get your thoughts on why we find self-love so hard and your tips for combatting this thought process. Please do comment to let me know!

Are you beach ready? - the beauty edit

To complement my beach fashion edit yesterday, today I shall share with you my top beach beauty products. To feel your best on the beach it is essential to put some pampering hours in before your departure date (and besides, which girl doesn't like to pamper herself from time to time?). The key to feeling you best on the beach is glowing skin, a good mani and pedi, and shining healthy hair. My simple top tips for glowing skin are (after a good waxing session!) 1) exfoliate 2) moisturise 3) protect in the sun. For a good mani and pedi you could pop to the beauty parlour, but if you can't afford this option or don't have the time, all you need is a good nail file and buffer, a bold bright nail polish, and gorgeously soft soles and palms. Finally for shining healthy hair head to the salon for a trim, and then make sure you use products which nourish your barnet. So read on for my tried and tested products to help you follow these top tips.

MY FINAL SECRET

VITA COCO
pure coconut water 1 litre
£3.49

Each of these products I use regularly when preparing for the beach, but also just for summer in general. My final secret - Vita Coco - is probably my best. For the last few months I have had some almost every morning, and it really does make you feel great. It's hydrating, nourishing, and totally delicious, and is the secret skin weapon for some of our top super models such as Miranda Kerr.

So I hope that some of my fashion and beauty tips will help you to feel your best on the beach this summer. But I would like to finish by saying that we really shouldn't put too much pressure on ourselves to feel "perfect". Sure it's nice to buy a few nice items of clothing, and to look after your body to feel pampered, but do these things for yourself, not because you feel the pressure to look "perfect". Who wants to be "perfect" anyway? Imperfections are beautiful - so try to embrace your imperfections this summer!

My Winter Beauty Secrets

The temperature in London right now is -1°c. It's cold, and it's only meant to get colder! This sort of weather is tough on your skin, hair and nails, so in the winter we need to spend that little extra time taking care of ourselves. You feel as though it's not worth it as you're constantly wrapping yourself up in coats, hats and gloves, but the more you look after yourself in the winter, the easier your routine will be to get ready for summer. Plus, if you know your skin feels nice under all those winter layers, you'll feel better in yourself on the outside.

So here are my top 11 winter beauty secrets - all tried and tested over the years, and all ones which I totally rely on during these long winter months!

L'OCCITANE
shea butter mango flower hand cream
£8

BURT'S BEES
lemon butter cuticle creme
£5.99

CLINIQUE
deep comfort body butter
£23

BURT'S BEES
tinted lip balm
£5.99

SOAP & GLORY
flake away
£7

AUSSIE

£4.95

BURT'S BEES
peppermint foot lotion
£12.99

SALLY HANSEN
hard as nails with nylon
£4.75

CLINIQUE
all about eyes
£24

NEUTROGENA
grapefruit facial scrub
£4.95

BIO OIL
60ml
£8.99

Each of these products really are fantastic for fighting those winter beauty demons. I use the L'occitane hand cream every day (it's on my desk at work!) and it's really great for keeping my hands soft, whilst smelling delicious! A new edition to my beauty regime is the Clinique body butter, and I absolutely adore it! After exfoliating with the Soap & Glory Flake Away exfoliator I love to treat myself with the Clinique body butter - it's not too thick, not too thin, and feels amazing on my winter battered skin! The grapefruit facial scrub has been part of my skincare routine for at least a year now, and is perfect for brightening dull winter skin as well as maintaining a healthy glow in the summer. To look after my nails I make sure that all nail varnish is properly removed, and then I apply the Burt's Bees lemon butter cuticle creme, which I let settle before applying a generous coating of the Sally Hansen strengthener. And Bio Oil should be a staple in any women's beauty regime - it's perfect for banishing unwanted scars and evening skin tone.

So I hope that you manage to try some of these products, I really do recommend them all. My winter beauty regime has been tried and tested for a number of years now, and these are the products that have become my staples and life savers!

What are your top tips for staying soft and glowing over the winter months?

My M.A.C. Love Affair

A peek into my make-up bag will tell you that I am obsessed with M.A.C. cosmetics. I love the chic black packaging, the silver embossed M.A.C. logo, but most of all, I love the products themselves. My love affair began at least five years ago when I first experienced the M.A.C. powder blusher in Pink Swoon - I was hooked from the beginning! The list of M.A.C. products that I rely on has grown steadily over the years, so here is a look at my top 5 products!

1.

 Powder Blush

powder blusher in Pink Swoon
£17.50
I love this product because it makes my otherwise-pale-cheeks look rosy and healthy every single day. I apply my foundation first, and then the loose powder (below), and then the blusher on top. It's great for highlighting your cheekbones and giving you that extra glow! I really couldn't do without it!
2.
 Select Sheer/Loose

sheer loose powder in NC15
£20.00
This powder is perfect for putting on top of liquid foundation as it really gives the skin that youthful dewy look that everyone desires. Like the blusher, I use it every day to give my skin that extra glow, and to even out my skin tone.
3.
 182 Buffer Brush
182 buffer brush
£32.50

I have had this brush for at least two years, and it is perfect for applying the above two products. It is a ridiculously soft brush, made from goat hair, and has lasted incredibly well. Don't forget to wash your brushes weekly to rid them of any bacteria and built up make-up!

4.

 Eye Shadow

eyeshadow in texture
£12.00

This eyeshadow is the newest M.A.C. product in my make-up bag (bought only two weeks ago), and I am so glad that I have discovered it! It is a great all-round eyeshadow, not too heavy, yet just enough to enhance the eyes and make an impression. My life often involves a long day at the office, and then going out afterwards, and this eyeshadow is great for day and night.

5.
 228 Mini Shader Brush

228 mini shader brush
£16.00

This brush is another recent addition to my make-up bag, and as with the eyeshadow, I am delighted with my purchase! It is small and thin enough to fit in my make-up when I need it to, and it is the perfect multi-functional eyeshadow brush; as well as using it for my lids, I also use it in the outer V of my eye, as it is dainty enough to give the right effect.

What are your M.A.C. must haves?

Going for Gold

With London still reveling in the success of the Olympic games, and about to play host to the Paralympics, it seems that we have become obsessed with all things gold!

Gold is one of the ancient beauty secrets. Its luxurious qualities were worshipped in both China and India thousands of years ago as a maintainer of youth and glowing skin.

If you're looking for modern day products containing the magic of gold then look no further! ORO GOLD Cosmetics products contain 24 carat gold and leave your skin feeling gloriously luminous.

Pictured above is the ORO GOLD 24K Gold Deep Peeling and is recommended to be used along with the 24K Deep Day Moisturizer. These products are not cheap, £100 and £129 respectively, however they are supposed to last a year, so you will get good use for your money!

http://orogoldskincare.co.uk

TIP: The ORO GOLD Cosmetics near Covent Garden (Long Acre) are offering a deal on these two products at the moment: if you buy the peel you get the moisturizer for free! Or if you're extra strapped for cash, they're giving away sachets of the moisturizer for free (it's got to be worth at least a fiver with real gold in it!).

So, if you want glowing, gorgeous, golden skin then definitely try ORO GOLD!
